A day we've anticipated, and perhaps feared, has finally arrived

two_candlesIn more ways than one. Considering yesterdays blog entry, and the mega aus.bicycle thread that I inadvertently ignited a few weeks back, this following news is extremely wrenching.
Man struck by cyclist dies
An elderly man has died in hospital after being struck by a cyclist in Melbourne's south on the weekend. The 77-year-old Mentone man was crossing Beach Road at a traffic light near the intersection of Naples Road in Mentone at 8.30am on Saturday. At the time, the "Hell Ride" - a weekly communal ride involving cyclists in groups of 100 or more - was taking place along Beach Road.
I first heard about the Mentone incident early Satuday arvo, with a warning this would be a inflammatory story. The only guide anyone could give Melbourne cyclists at the moment, is to remain calm, don't buy into any unnecessary palavar and basically do the right thing while out in public. The meedya are probably going to have a freaking field day with blowing this tragic incident out of all perspective, although, something positive just may develop. A small percentage of cyclists, the "Vagabond and Volatile" cyclists, just may receive a unpleasant, but necessary, wakeup call to behave and obey the law.

Another example of a day perhaps anticipated - and perhaps feared - has finally arrived. For Eugene McGee.
McGees to stand trial over hit-run conduct
Adelaide lawyer Eugene McGee and his brother Craig have been committed to stand trial in the District Court on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Eugene McGee was convicted of driving without due care over the hit-run death of cyclist Ian Humphrey near Gawler almost three years ago. Last year he and his brother Craig were further charged with obstructing the police investigation in the hours following the hit-run.
A bittersweet day indeed.

  • I reckon the media have it right. It's pretty black and white this one. Some louts, well known for breaking the road rules, finally killed someone.

The people on the Hell Ride need to take a good hard look at themselves.

  • This mans death is made even more tragic by the fact there are so many cyclists who know how to ride and behave correctly.

I am so angry about this, especially angry for damn good people like you who obviously fought so hard for cyclist rights.

Damn selfish pricks fucking up the road for everyone. It's not fair cyclists are now going to be targeted because of the actions of a few selfish areseholes.

  • It's making me tear my hair out. The motorists lobbies must be laughing their heads off. Yes, it's tragic, but ONE fatality (caused by hoonism more than cycling per se) and road bikes are suddenly PUBLIC ENEMY NO 1. Whereas people merrily go on killing themselves in cars every. fucking. day. Oh but that's different. And yes I thought of the Eugene McGee case too.
