Ben Flys Again!
13 March 2005, 12pm to 2pm, Yarra River – Sea Wall (Birrarung Marr)
Those magnificent men and women in their flying machines, they may go up but they’re certainly going to come down. Soak in all the action as the Birdman Rally returns to the Yarra River once again. Best viewing from both sides of the River.
If this horrid dose of 'flu buggers off, we'll be down there with bells on, and possibly a party whistle or two. Many years ago a HPV 'accidentally' did 110km an hour in _ur_l_y _unn_l in a 60km an hour zone. Don't think that's going to happen again anytime soon....

Ahh! A bloody strut snapped so Ben had to dive off with a 4m wing instead of 8m. Terrific fun though, much sticky tape, zipties & face painting for the grownups. There's already a strategic change in tactics for next years attempt.
Only one grumble, Birrarung Marr is too frigging dusty.
Birdman Rally thrills at Moomba
A nurse, the toothfairy and Zorro jumped into the Yarra River as crowds flocked to the Moomba festival in Melbourne.
About 900,000 people are expected to have attended the four-day event, which is its 50th year, by the time it ends on Monday.
Some 300,000 people watched as fireworks lit up the city sky on Saturday night, and the popular Birdman Rally thrilled spectators on Sunday.
The rally, which began in 1976, involves competitors jumping off a pontoon into the Yarra River and trying to 'fly' the longest distance before hitting the water.
Most of the 16 competitors used winged contraptions they had built, but some costumed characters just took an unaided run and dove into the river.
The winning jump was 10 metres - well short of the record 48 metres set in 1990.

Greetings cileo - BREAKING AWAY a 1979 film you might find in a non-Bustblocker video store: "Dennis Christopher is so good in this quietly charming, Peter Yates-directed tale of four high school graduates trying to decide what to do with their lives that it's a wonder he didn't achieve the heights of co-star Dennis Quaid. The story has Christopher finding his calling in the shape of cycling, and in particular a race against an Italian bike team. The scenes of our hero preparing himself for the challenge by listening to opera and actually pretendng to be an Italian exchange student, are amusing, but it's the male bonding and the race itself that really push all the feel-good buttons".
I remember liking it. Peter Yates directed the 60's car chase cult flick Bullitt. cheers and good luck, exonome.blogspot.com/

Good news - I hated to think you might not have seen it. (love Dennis Quaid - when Meg Ryan was with Ruff Crowe and the media was saying how could she handle him - I thought how silly, she has had 11 years of Quaidy a recovering alcoholic and is tougher than she looks).pedal pedal pedal.
