The Wondrous Adventures of Telfon Johnny

Howard tipped to visit cyclists in German hospital

No. He didn't. Telfon Johnny went to the cricket.

PM ducks out for cricket relief
Asked whether he was planning to visit the injured Australian cyclists in Leipzig, Germany, he said that was not possible because of several logistical reasons. Asked whether he intended going to the cricket, he said: "Bye, bye."

Then he got on a big plane and was secretly whisked off to Iraq. Imagine if a similar disaster befell the Australian Cricket Team. Oh, envisage the wailing and gnashing of teeth, the national grief and introspection.....

  • "Imagine if a similar disaster befell the Australian Cricket Team."

You have summed up the current English national psyche right there...

  • Sort of, but then we drew in the final. And the ODIs aren't the same as The Ashes. Grr!

Heh. I'm not the only guy who's too cynical.

    A dream of a race

I have a dream! One day when we all ride bicycles and use public transport, we will stop to watch an annual car race throughout the most beautiful parts of Europe. The scenery never ceases to amaze. To the organisers, participants and Lance Armstrong, well done (again).

    A logistical excuse?

Had it been Australian Test cricketers who were killed and injured in Germany, rather than cyclists, would John Howard have visited them? "Logistical issue" indeed. The logistics of a complete lack of care for other human beings. Helen Wayland, St Kilda East

  • Do you think it's partly because they're female sporting participants too? I'm not trying to sound overly PC or stir here but it's pretty obvious women get a raw deal when it comes to their sporting achievements being taken seriously (with the possible exception of female tennis players, who still don't get the same acclaim and money as the men).
