GetUp is a new political movement to build a more progressive Australia. GetUp brings together like-minded people who want to bring participation back into our democracy. GetUp members use the latest online tools to act on the most important issues facing the country.

    MoveOn has become a massive force in American politics. Australians on balance are more progressive than Americans, so the environment to suit has always been here for a MoveOn type outfit. Without an opposition party post 9 Aug, the timing is ideal for a grassroots progressive alliance.

    GetUp is pretty much a big email database. Supporters will be asked to write letters, make phone calls, send faxes, etc. to Lib pollies to let 'em know we're paying attention to particular issues.

    Nose around on www.moveon.org to get an idea of how GetUp will most likely operate in Australia.

    Without an effective opposition party, there's nothing to stop HoWARd from steamrollering through everything from IR "reforms" to abolishing womens' reproductive rights. GetUp will function to pressure Liberal pollies into acting for Australians instead of themselves.

    I chucked a donation in their kitty. Wonder if they need any volunteers...

    Sen Andrew Robb was on the ABC's 7:30 Report last night... and named GetUp emails to him as 'spam.' Clearly, the man can't tell the diff between Viagra and the will of the people.
